With Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan did the unexpected. Instead of making a war film, he approached a historical event as a story of human survival. With little to no dialogue, no generals in boardrooms, no looks at the enemy and a ticking soundtrack full of tension, Dunkirk reversed what we know about the war film. In this video essay, I discuss how Christopher Nolan approached Dunkirk and why it's essential to understanding him as a genre director. This is the final video in my Christopher Nolan Marathon on the road to TENET.
