The giant ameiva is found in Central and South America, living in variable habitats including recently harvested rain forest. Covered in smooth scales they have distinctive “femoral pores” that differ in number between males and females. The femoral pores/glands may function to establish territory size – however, the species is not known to be territorial, having home ranges that overlap with other individuals.
