Endovenous Ablation Procedure

Published 7 Nov 2016

Endovenous Ablation Procedure This video will show and describe to you how varicose veins are treated with an endovenous ablation procedure here at Advanced Vein Care, performed by Dr. David Faber. The leg to be treated will be cleansed and draped for the procedure. The leg will be positioned, ultrasound gel will be placed on the leg, and the vein to be treated will be confirmed by ultrasound. Dr. Faber will inject a small amount of local anesthetic called lidocaine at the insertion site. A very thin needle will be used to access the vein similar to starting an IV. Then a very thin wire is floated through the needle into the vein and the needle is then removed. A device called an introducer is then fed over the wire which is used as a guide for the catheter. The guidewire is then removed and the radiofrequency catheter or laser fiber, is then passed through the introducer and floated up through the vein to what is called the saphenofemoral junction. Dr. Faber will then confirm by ultrasound that the catheter or fiber is in the correct position. The next step is to inject tumescent anesthesia into the tissue surrounding the vein. This helps separate the vein from surrounding tissues. It prevents damage to the skin from the heat used in the procedure and provides pain relief for you during the procedure. After the tumescent anesthesia is injected, Dr. Faber will once again confirm everything is positioned correctly in your vein by ultrasound. When everything is in position the ablation will begin. The procedure itself will only last a few minutes. There is generally very minimal blood loss and other than a few needle sticks, very little discomfort. The leg will be washed to clean off any remaining detergent and pressure will be applied to the site of insertion. Gauze will then be placed over all the injection sites. A compression stocking is applied, and then you may change back into your regular clothing. You will be asked to walk around the office for about 20 minutes before you leave. If you have any questions about the procedure, please feel free to contact us at Advanced Vein Care at 814-515-9919. We look forward to taking care of you.
