Lagos Pipeline Explosion Avoidable, Govt, Security Agencies to Blame –Residents | Punch

Residents of Ekoro area, Abule Egba, Lagos State have accused the government and security agencies of being responsible for the pipeline explosion that rocked the area on Sunday evening. According to the residents, who spoke to our correspondent, operatives of the security agencies guiding the pipeline usually provide cover for vandals. They also said that complaints to the government since April have remained largely unattended to. One of the residents said, “Where they have been vandalising was where exploded yesterday. When it exploded, I ran to the security agents and told them to call Mosimi, to lock up the something…I met them drinking beer there. “That vandalised spot before it caught fire spent 43 minutes, 33 seconds, I was watching my time. Where is the government? Several times, we have gone to them.” He added, “We called the fire service, no one responded. It was two hours after the fire started burning that they came. And when they arrived, the fire was uncontrollable, they could not even near the fire.” As of the time of filing this report, the number of deaths recorded in the pipeline explosion had increased to five. According to the Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the five fatalities include three adult males, one female, and a five-year-old child. He stated that no fewer than 20 people who sustained minor injuries were given on-the-spot treatment, adding that the fire incident had displaced over 150 people. Oke-Osanyintolu said, “Five fatalities including three adult males, one adult female, and a five-year-old child were discovered. Also, 20 people were treated for minor injuries and discharged at the scene, while 150 people including children were displaced. “The buildings affected are a storey building at No 18 Musa Erimo Street and four buildings, including a storey building and three bungalows on No 1, No 2, No 7 and No 20, Joel Nnadede Street, in Ekoro.
