Chinese Garden Malta : China's Garden of Serenity in Santa Lucija The Chinese Garden of Serenity (Ġnien is-Serenità) is a public Chinese garden in Santa Luċija, Malta. Construction of the Garden of Serenity began in September 1996 as a gift to Malta from the People's Republic of China. Alfred Sant, Malta's Prime Minister at the time, opened it on July 7, 1997. It is maintained by the Local Council of Santa Lucija. Two stone lions - one masculine and one feminine - guard the main entrance to the inner gardens. The lions might be from the poem "Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den". There are statues to the Maltese prehistoric Goddess (or Fat Lady as she is known) and other gifts from countries like Slovakia. Chinese gardens are intended to encourage people to roam freely in their inner thoughts and are designed around three principles. A garden must: Reflect the local environment by incorporating natural rather artificially elements—spontaneous and offering surprises rather than simple symmetry Represent a world of its own, complete in thought—with all phases of nature represented in the service of human thoughts — the yin and yang Fit the limits of its area while providing the element of surprise, the sense that there are other things to be seen Rocks and water are the two important physical elements in a Chinese garden. Their combination forms architecture and horticulture. Rocks and water symbolize the basis of nature, yin and yang, all that gives life. Rocks are the body of the world—the hills and valleys. The water is the world's spirit, providing oxygen, breath, liquid clouds, blood running through the veins. The rocks symbolize all that is active, the work, the forces of work. The water symbolizes all that is contemplated—all that complements work, thought, freedom, silence, and reflection— in other words, serenity. The “Serenity Garden” in Santa Luċija therefore is a symbol of life, the entire life from birth to death. The fountain at the very beginning of the garden is the figure of birth, with the water in the background symbolising the mother, the water as if giving birth, the happiness of a new life. The beginning of childhood. Childhood is indeed represented by the space found between the fountain and the actual garden door, the door to maturity. This video is not monetised, it is there to encourage people to visit these gardens after the pandemic ends.
